Furniture Inventory Turnover Benchmarks 2026

Conventional furniture retailers run 2.1x to 3.3x annual turnover. Drop-ship pure-plays (Wayfair) report 100x+ because they hold almost no inventory themselves. Comparing the two without segmenting business model is misleading.

Per-retailer notes

Williams-Sonoma (WSM)

3.0x turnover

Multi-brand operator: Pottery Barn, West Elm, Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn Kids. DTC ecom mix dilutes need for deep store inventory.

RH (Restoration Hardware) (RH)

2.1x turnover

Premium / luxury home positioning. Deep inventory of multi-thousand-dollar items, longer customer consideration cycle.

Wayfair (W)

100x+ turnover

Almost entirely drop-ship model. Wayfair carries minimal inventory itself; vendor warehouses fulfil orders. Turnover figure is therefore not comparable to physical store peers.

Havertys Furniture (HVT)

3.3x turnover

Mid-market full-service furniture chain. Higher inventory turn than RH because price point is lower and replenishment cycle is faster.

Furniture-specific economics

Furniture is a high-consideration, low-frequency purchase. The average US household replaces a sofa every 7-10 years. That demand pattern produces three inventory effects:

  • Long sell-through window. A premium-priced sofa may sit in showroom inventory for 90-180 days before the buyer commits. RH and similar luxury operators design for this.
  • Special-order share. A meaningful percent of premium furniture orders are configured (fabric, finish), pulled from manufacturer not held stock. Williams-Sonoma discloses special-order as a distinct revenue line.
  • Container shipping cycle. Most furniture is imported. Order to landed inventory takes 6-12 weeks; that lead time forces deeper safety stock for fast-movers and accepts slower turn for slow-movers.
